That real cheesy experience
As a huge fan of Dutch cheese, I’ve never quite found cheddar to hit the spot — it just doesn’t give that rich, cheesy experience. During my time in Cornwall, I discovered one brand that changed my mind: Davidstow Cheddar Extra Mature, aged for 24 months. It was hands down the best cheddar I’d tried. So you can imagine my surprise (and excitement!) when I spotted a package of it at Waitrose in Harrogate, Yorkshire. No hesitation — I grabbed it right away!
Now, near where I’m staying in Hawes, there’s the famous Wensleydale Creamery. Honestly, I wasn’t too interested in visiting at first. But I did want to explore the town, and that’s when fate — or rather, a parking mishap — led me straight to the Creamery’s doors. My cards refused to work when I tried to pay for parking, and since I wasn’t keen on driving back, I went looking for another solution. That’s how I ended up at the Creamery.

It appeared to be a cheese lover’s paradise! They offer a dozen freshly produced cheeses, and the best part? You can taste them all. Of course, I couldn’t resist. From mature and extra mature varieties to unique flavours like ginger, blueberry, and pineapple, I sampled them all. To my surprise, they were amazing! I walked away with two extra mature cheeses and a ginger cheese before heading into town.

One thing is certain: before I leave, I’ll be stocking up on a good stash of cheese!
If you’re ever in the area, it’s worth stopping by for a taste. You might be just as surprised as I was.
