Some say that their spirits lived on in the mine...
Red, yellow or blue? I look at my clothes. The blue helmet makes the best match with my blue vest and jeans. The entrance of the mine is grandiose. A spacious hall equipped with a stage for events. You can even get married here. How different from the days in which this mine was created.
I duck my head to get through the gate into the second part of the mine. Another huge hall. On the top there is a collection of the type of stones that were mined. The most beautiful gemstones and crystals are exhibited here. I had no idea that even amethyst was mined in Cornwall.
In the lower part of the mine, two caves are now filled with water. Beautifully transparent and clean water. The mine is lighted, making it easy to walk and see everything. In the far end however, statues of miners with a candle on their metal helmet remind us of the days when mines were not lit up. Looking at some dark spots, I imagine the difficulties the people must have had when making their way into the dark hallways, with the candle blowing out time and again and the candle wax dripping on their arms or face, causing burns and scars. Meanwhile they worked hard to cut out stone, deafened by the echoing sound of hammers, listening to the continuous sounds of stones falling, alert to sounds that would indicate that parts were about to collapse.
There is an info board that tells of the miners who lost their lives in the mine. Some say that their spirits lived on in the mine, warning the miners of danger in an effort to protect them. As I read this, the familiar sensation of non-physical presence arises. I open my awareness to it and sense how the presence now expands.
"You are really here, aren't you?"
A sigh of relief.
"How can I help?"
What I perceive is the need for acknowledgement, to be noticed and heard. These spirits are indeed protecting the Cave and will keep doing so as long as the cave is being used. Voluntarily. Only then when the mine closes, they will move on into infinity, their task fulfilled.
