It's like we're flying over the mountains...
February 3th. It's Friday and a true FriYay this is. Today I'm going to explore the Black Mountains on horseback. Did the past weeks give us a lot of frost, snow and rain showers, today the temperatures are kind (about 8 degrees) and it is dry. A good start.
Upon arrival I'm being greeted enthousiastically and introduced to a beautiful black Welsh Cob D who has been assigned the job of carrying me around today. After grooming and tacking we mount and are ready to go. For some weird reason, not many people feel attracted to a day ride in early February 😉 and so Rosie, my guide, and I ride off together.
From the stables it's a short hack into the mountains where we can ride without meeting any traffic and meet only an occasional hiker. My horse is calm, very sure-footed which is a good thing for sure on this rocky land. For the looks of it, it's still slippery here and there from the rains, but the horses are not once bothered by it. We make a few canters and I feel like flying over the mountains.
After many years without riding, it's wonderful to be on horseback again.
At lunchtime, we stopped in a village to have lunch at a café. The horses? Oh goodness we parked them in the parking lot. They were totally comfortable with that, knowing it well. It made me laugh really. Can you imagine parking your horse? Obviously we kept an eye out but all went well. How cool would it be if travelling on horseback would be common again?
